At the age of 18 I moved to Ireland to live and work on a farm as a carer for people with intellectual disabilities. In this role I very quickly learnt the importance of communication, selective hearing and behaviour management. This was a 24/7 job with real responsibility and I loved it.
Since my year in Ireland I have worked with adults and children who have special needs in Australia and the USA. Through working in this field I have developed strong communication and listening skills and a flexible approach to working with people. I understand that everybody is unique and therefore have different talents and interests that they can bring to any given situation. This is an understanding that I bring into my classroom.
As part of my Masters of Teaching I researched methods of teaching and including young people with disabilities into mainstream lessons. Now, as a qualified teacher, I am interested in working with a diverse range of students with differing abilities and individual personalities.
